My Lucky #13 by Piper Rayne5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() She’s going to learn that I didn’t become a professional hockey player without having to fight for what I want. I find her and when I get to know her better, I end up spending more time thinking about her than my game, but she’s made it clear she wants no part of me. Get your mind out of the gutter, I’m not talking about it. Now, I have to track her down and bribe her to do it again before every game. It did not disappoint We first met Aiden and Saige in the novella Countdown to a Kiss, where they attended the same New Years Eve party and the evening ended with Saige throwing a glass of white wine. Imagine my surprise when after spending New Year’s Eve with a woman, I score a hat trick in the next game-that’s three goals in one game for you non-hockey lovers. My Lucky 13 was one of my most anticipated reads this year since it pairs three of my favorite things: Piper Rayne, sports romance and hockey. I’d wear the same socks for an entire year just to be the high-scoring center I used to be. But now the best way to refer to me is desperate. ![]() ![]() I haven’t scored in eight games and my team owner is talking about trading me. I prefer to call it hard work, at least I did until my game went to complete crap. The one adjective used to describe my entire hockey career. ![]()

September rosamunde5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Though the tensions of the plot seem a bit contrived-the secrets of a glamorous woman returned to her childhood home too late to find peace, the circumstances of a bloody incident in Northern Ireland, the meddling of a mentally disturbed, malign woman-the novel will keep readers deeply involved. The Airds and the Balmerinos of Strathcroy and their friends and relatives in London, Majorca and the States are the focal point of the love affairs, domestic complications, estrangements, reconciliations and other gently momentous events. A lavish coming-out party for the daughter of one of the leading families of a town in the Scottish Highlands brings together characters whose lives change in various ways during the novel's four-month span. The story moves leisurely among large estates in the author's native Scotland, posh London digs and quaint village cottages. Here again she limns appealing characters with civilized manners who live in beautiful settings she describes tastefully furnished rooms, magnificent gardens and elegant clothes in loving detail-but without the loud dropping of brand names. Pilcher is one of the best current practitioners of literate commercial fiction. ![]()

Urban italian by andrew carmellini5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() I picked up a penchant for Lebanese and Israeli food thanks to my parents traipsing me through so many parts of the world. I learned to cook Chinese food from little old Chinese women in college. They're nice enough, I admit, but I prefer the bold temerity of Asian and Middle Eastern styles of cooking. I'm generally not a super fan of Western European styles of food preparation and flavors. That's how I feel, or felt, about Urban Italian by Andrew Carmellini. I think the most daunting task about getting a cookbook which singularly covers a specific type of cuisine you aren't used to cooking is its perceived exoticness. The perfume collector reviews5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Eva’s story of endurance and ingenuity might stand alone in a different and shorter novel, but the author has previously expressed admiration for Tom Stoppard’s and A.S. Unraveling the mystery behind Grace’s inheritance, Tessaro alternates between flashbacks to Eva’s dramatic experiences in occupied Paris and after the war, and Grace’s romantic adventures in Paris. Within the next pages, young Grace Munroe of London receives news of a bequest from a recently deceased stranger-one Madame d’Orsey of Paris. The book opens in 1955: Eva d’Orsey, mistress of a cosmetics magnate and former muse to a perfumier, is dying and has just made final arrangements for her estate. She tells the story of two women linked by a secret only one knows she stitches together two timelines, interweaves two plots, and tailors this work like a vintage designer dress. The author invites the reader into a fashionable world where scent and apparel wield transformative magic. Kathleen Tessaro’s fifth novel should be read in bed, propped on pillows, or beneath a beach umbrella, or in a bubble bath. ![]()

Deep Is the Hunger by Howard Thurman5/13/2023 ![]() What are the spiritual foundations of such communities? Together, in an imagined conversation with one another, Howard Thurman and Process Theology offer eight ideas that can support such communities. In quiet but effective ways, their sense of love includes people, other animals, and the earth. The people in these communities know that they are small but included in a larger web of life. They are, in the language of Martin Luther King, Jr., beloved communities. ![]() The building blocks of an ecological civilization are local communities that are creative, compassionate, participatory, egalitarian, multi-religious, humane to animals, and good for the earth, with no one left behind. The following eight ideas flow from an imagined conversation between one of the world's most influential religious thinkers of the past one hundred years, Howard Thurman, and the unfolding tradition of process philosophy, whose sights are now turned toward the urgent need for ecological civilizations. ![]()
